Before everyone tells me how beautiful night is and how peaceful and stuff like that, I totally agree with you. But it doesn't make my fear of the dark any easier.
Crap happens in the dark. I’m not kidding, dude. Socks under the bed become feet monsters. Clothes hanging in the closet become people without heads. Anything that moves or makes a sound becomes someone or something coming to eat you in your sleep. Power outages suck.
I have 5 nightlights in my house. One in the hallway by
my bedroom. One in the kids’ room. One in the kitchen. One in the hallway
downstairs in the basement. One in the bathroom in the basement. And even with
the nightlights, I use the glow of my cell to get around the house when I’m
making it from one light switch to another in the middle of the night.
Also, when I turn off the lights behind me, my pace gets
quicker the darker it gets. I know I look like a fool running from an invisible
monster, but hey… that’s where my imagination takes me.
As for going potty in the dark? Um, not happening.

I totally agree with this. I hate the dark. Not outside dark, I'm fine with that, but inside dark. It has the potential for BAD things to happen.
Haha I used to be like that. I don't know how it happened, but now I'm not afraid and can wander about the place without a single light on - wish I knew what I did to not be scared any more! :)
Universal Gibberish
I am the same lol. I don't have nightlights in my house, but I do take my mobile phone as a light if I must get up in the dark!
I've never been afraid of the dark, but that's totally me! Uh, I really don't fear much of anything. I even walk around my basement after all the lights are out to check up on things. Yes, in the dark. Yes, when everyone else has gone to bed. :) I'm freaky that way! :D
Mostly I'm okay in the dark (though I randomly wake up at 2:30 and have to check my house for serial killers), but I watched a particularly creepy episode of Criminal Minds right before bed a week or so ago. I kid you not, I sat in the bed with my knees tucked up to my chest, and I couldn't bring myself to shut the light until I went and distracted myself.
This is my kids. Yes, most kids use nightlights, but that's not enough for mine. They want their little lamp on so I had to find the lowest wattage bulb, I think 15 watts, cause I didn't want it being so bright in their rooms. Plus their hallway light is on.
I can't sleep with all that light. I don't know how they do it.
I hate the dark! We have nightlights everywhere too. And forget about going outside. I don't care if Freddy or Jason was in there, I'm not stepping foot outside. UGH!
That's a great picture. I used to have so many monster who lived in my room when I was a kid. Didn't help that we always watched The Twilight Zone and that fed my nighttime fears.
We had a heater outside my bedroom door that would cause all the old floors and walls to creak whenever it kicked on at night. I knew the monsters were out then.
One night when that I happened it woke me up. On my top bunk, I could feel this heavy weight laying across my waist. I touched it to see what it was and it was someone's arm. I absolutely flipped out, grabbed it and threw it away from me. Then the blood started coming back into my arm and I could feel it again with all the tingling. Ugh. It was my own numb arm that had been laying wrong and gone to sleep. My adrenaline was pumping so bad and the tingling hurt that it kept me away for a while.
I probably shouldn't tell you about my night of terror then, should I? Let's just say having physical proof that something was in my house at night is enough to scare the crap out of anyone.
Solar night lights. I had one for my kids.
ack! it is really scary when you can't see where you're going!
or what is lurking out there...
Truth: I'm normally fine with the dark, but if my hubs is out of town, the noises in my house scare me so bad I can't fall asleep until 2 or 3 am and when I do it's with my cell phone in my hand, ready to call for backup.
The dark doesn't bother me very much unless I'm dumb enough to watch a scary movie before bed.
That cartoon is quite funny.
Very true, the dark is scary. Rest assured that you are not the only one.
(I also run from imaginary monsters...)
Kyra: Thank the world for cell phones right?
Jack: My hubs does this too. He just groans and gets up to search the house whenever I 'hear a noise'.
Suzi: I'm that way if I've watched a scary show before bed. I sleep in the living room with the light and TV on. :)
How can you be afraid of so many things and still functional? You are too funny. I can't sleep with any light at all.
Oh Cass... I just want to hug you! Pet your head until all your fears go away! LOL. I've never been scared of the dark... I've always... loved it! It's peaceful. Magical.
Girl, we are going to go play at a graveyard and face all your fears at once! Ohhhh... *plots*
Hilarious posting on the subject. I remember when we lived in an older house the dog would go running and barking for no reason at night. One night I woke hubby up I was ready to pack that night and move thinking the dog saw things we didn't. He went looking and found the dog barking at the kitchen door. It turns out the shadows from the tree in the yard freaked the dog out.
Nightlights are awesome. Don't let anyone tell you different!!
We have nightlights in our house, too. I can't get to the bathroom without them! Somethings are worth the money. :)
This one is totally understandable. Walking outside in the dark can bring on breathing attacks. I keep lights on for the kids but if I didn't have kids I would keep the house dark though.
I like this Bob in the cartoon. Ghosts come out at night. Just adding that. :oP
I kinda like the dark. Although I feel better when I have shoes on, normally I'm all about going barefoot, but when I can't see what's under my feet I like to have something between them and the ground.
who wouldn't be afraid of the dark, Freddie Krueger lurks there ... :(
Lol.
I don't like the dark either. I downloaded one of those bright light apps to my cellphone just so I can get around at night when I'm going from the living room to my bedroom. Friggen' thing is blinding and lights up the house like Christmas, but that's all right with me.
I was terrified of the dark as a kid - I thought if the lights were on, no big scary monster would get me. I had nightmares that the light switches wouldn't work and I was stuck in the dark.
This is a fear I can hide from right beside you!
That cartoon is precious!
And I slept with the light on in my bedroom til I was 12. No lie. Overactive imaginations can be stressful My 7 year old son is going thru it right now... not from seeing too many scary movies, but from reading scary books. Isn't that funny? Ya, not really.
I hate the dark! And I'm still anxious about things under my bed. Likely due to my brother hiding under the bed and grabbing my ankles when I'd get up when I was a kid, but I can't have any limbs hanging off the bed when I sleep.
I was thinking about this today! For real! We must be so in sync! I am getting better with the dark, but I still get nervous and run up the stairs and out of the bathroom at times. It helps to have nightlights. Thank heaven for them! :)
I totally agree. I slept with a nightlight until last year and I'm finally getting used to being in the dark, but before... I would wake up if the bulb in the nightlight went out because I just knew it was dark!
PK: I always slept with the TV on. I still would if the hubs would let me.
Emily: Agh! I'd kick him in the face if my brother did that to me!
I'm only afraid of the dark if I am home alone. When you think about it that is silly, I know. I mean, really, what are my teenagers going to do to help me if a crazed lunatic with a knife is hiding in my closet??
Does jumping in your bed and pulling the covers up make you safe? I know it works for me. :)
Then I won't tell you about the scorpion my mom found in the middle of the night in the bathroom when we lived in Arizona...
Do you hold it the whole night??!
And you don't have to apologize. Humans have been fearful of the "other" in the dark since we climbed our way out of the primordial ooze. If we weren't, i wouldn't be able to publish any of my horror short stories. And that would suck haaaard.
As writers, we tend to have overactive imaginations, anyway. The darkness just provokes that. I mean, what if there are bugs or zombies or... Reavers? *Shudder*
Great post! :)
just reading your post titles cracks me up!
and my boys (8, 11, 13) need at least 2 nite lites each plus "fun" lites, moon in my room, spongebob nite lite, lava lamp. really, boys!
oh, but i understand that creepy feeling there could be an alien or monster ready to chase you up from the basement when you turn the lights out! never really outgrow it...
The dark is scary! Especially when the hubs is away on business!!
Do you have a list of things you're scared of the way Monk does?
And going back to your earwig thing, I pulled a tick out of my son's ear this morning.
Not to give you anything new to add to your list?
Oh, and you might not want to read my Tib stuff when it starts being available. It's all about the dark and shadows and stuff.
:P
I have about 15 night lights in my house and I'd like to say they are for the kids, but of course they're for some other people too. :)
Cassie - you're hilarious.
Are you sick of me saying this in the comments?
When it's dark at 4 pm all winter, you get used to navigating in the dark ;)
Imagine what your electric bill would be up here...
I like the dark most of the time... but when I watch a creepy movie and then go to bed, my mind messes with me. Every little noise freaks me out until I get up and go investigate or ask my hubby to. :D
Krista: Oh my gosh, I do that too!
Carrie: Mine is ghosts. I swear it's always ghosts that come creeping around my house.
Tara: I used to have a Harry Potter nightlight. I miss it :(
Jackie: Yup, I've been watching Watching Dead before bed. Not a good idea, lol.
Nightlights and lava lamps galore in my house!!
